Fungi, Fungi on the Ground — A Short Poem

Image via National Geographic – Zombie Ant Under Attack by Fungus

fungi, fungi, on the ground

what’s this crazy thing I found?

a zombie ant that’s lost its way

explodes in spores and ruins his day

or could you work to feed a rose

and simply, fully decompose

those coffee grounds

with little mounds

of tasty little mushrooms found

oh, yummy goodness all around

fungi, fungi, on the ground

Thank you, Jean François, of 222 Million Tons for the spark of inspiration.  Nature is so very cool and interesting.

So get out there, you people, and experience it all — especially the microscopic little guys.

  1. Sci-fi indeed! I’ve always thought that most of the monsters I came across on TV as I was growing up (although I tried to avoid them, to be honest) had to have been inspired by nature – fungi and insects especially.

    1. It was that phrase that started the poetic process. What I find amazing about the microbial other world is that no species is without its “check.” Even the fungus that checks an over-populated ant population has another fungus that checks it.

And humans are no where near the top of the food chain like we like to think.
